    Putnam Cat.No.400 No.231 Top Brake for No.2 Rolling Telephone Ceiling Ladder
    This item was found in storage at a closed contracting company.
    Cat.No. 400 consists of a No.231 Top Brake with release rope and rope clamps.  I didn't receive any rope clamps with this brake, and the brake doesn't come with rollers at the top, but includes the mounting bolt springs, lever and the brake pads and spring assembly shown.

    This item is used with a telephone ladder, which were originally designed for use in telecommunication switching stations. With a track attached to the ceiling, the ladder is able to roll back and forth within a narrow space or hallway.
    The No.231 Brake keeps the ladder from unintended movement when someone is on the ladder. To release the brake allowing the ladder to roll, engage the brake arm by pulling on the attached rope.
    I suspect this item could be adapted for use in other applications, but you will have to determine that for yourself.
    Dimensions: 11" wide x 9" high overall excluding the lever arm and rope, 9-3/4" on center between roller holes, 3-1/2" x 1" brake pads, 1-1/2" from one pad to the other when the brake is on, about 1-3/8" from one pad to the other when the lever is pulled down and the brake is off (contracts the brakes about 1/8" to release the brake), 8" high from the top of the pads to the bottom mounting bolt on center

    Condition is very good, unused I suspect.  It has some oxidation to exposed metal parts from sitting in storage for some time.
